US Citizenship Eligibility Requirements
BIRTH IN THE UNITED STATES:
A person born in the United States is a US Citizen irrespective of the status of his/her parent.
BIRTH OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES:
Birth of child outside the United States to US Citizen Parent confers US Citizenship to the child when he/she is less than 18 years old.
ADOPTION BY US CITIZEN PARENT:
Children adopted an in physical custody of their US citizen parents for at least two years may acquire US Citizenship upon fulfilling certain condition.
NATURALIZATION
Lawful permanent residents (also known as green card holders) of the United States need to meet the eligibility requirements.
Citizenship through naturalization, you have to meet the following requirements. You should:
- Need to be more than 18 years to apply
- A lawful permanent resident for 5 years (3 years if married to a US citizen).
- Have maintained continuous residence during the past 5 years (3 years if married to a US citizen).
- Have maintained physical presence during the past 5 years (3 years if married to a US citizen).
- Have good moral character.
- Have basic knowledge of English.
- Have basic knowledge of US government and history.
- Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance.
